Osteoporosis medication, originally designed for the bone-thinning disease is now being considered as a possible breakthrough treatment for baldness. A recent study shows potential for the drug to help stimulate the growth of human hair follicles.
Today, in terms of medications, patients are limited to the choice of only two FDA approved options - Minoxidil and Finasteride for the treatment of hair loss or androgenetic alopecia. Given the potential for severe psychological distress caused by baldness, more, but most importantly safe, hair loss solutions are needed.
Why Hair Loss Drugs Don’t Work
The key issues with today’s hair loss drugs and medications are that moderate or even more serious side effects exist and their effectiveness stops when their use is stopped. Topical and oral hair loss solutions slow down loss more than they prevent it, or they relaunch the growth of hair affected by baldness. This is why many men, and to a lesser extent, women, turn to hair transplant as a more suitable and permanent solution.

Potential New Drug
An article recently published in PLOS Biology Journal reports that during the research project, which aimed to find new, well-tolerated drugs to treat baldness, Dr. Hawkshaw and team of researchers at the University of Manchester, discovered that WAY-316606, the main active ingredient in osteoporosis medication, could effectively improve the growth of human hair.
The research team initially focused on the action of Cyclosporin A (CsA), a drug that prevents the rejection of transplanted organs and the fight against autoimmune diseases. It also reduces the activity of protein SFRP1 that prevents the development and growth of hair follicles.
However, because of its many side effects, CsA has never been considered to treat baldness. That's why researchers turned to WAY-316606, a drug that fights osteoporosis and also targets the SFRP1 protein.
Tests were performed on hair follicle samples provided by about 40 patients with baldness. After just two days of treatment under WAY-316606, the bulbs started producing new hair. Although initial discoveries are encouraging, clinical trials are the next step to determine safety and efficacy. This process could take many years.
