Posted by DHI Australia on August 30, 2018

Do you sometimes make a joke about your progressing baldness, trying to make it sound as though it doesn’t bother you? Have you made wearing a hat an art form? As a man, finding a way to talk to your wife or partner about how you really feel about losing your hair can be extremely difficult. How do you bring up the subject? How do you explain the impact it’s having on you? What if you’re not taken seriously? Sometimes you may feel like it’s just easier to “grin and bear it”. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Many DHI patients find that once they discuss the impact of hair loss with their partner, they feel less anxious and more positive. We give you a few helpful tips to make broaching the subject with your loved one easier.

What Is DHT & What Is Its Role In Hair Loss?

Posted by DHI Australia on July 20, 2018

You may already know that DHT plays a role in hair loss, but what exactly is it? DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone and it is an androgen, or hormone, responsible for giving men their male characteristics, such as body hair, increased muscle mass and deeper voice. The 5a-reductase enzyme synthesises DHT from testosterone in areas such as the prostate and hair follicles. DHT is considered to be a contributor to male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia as it is thought to cause hair follicles to miniaturise.

Treatments that block DHT may be able to prevent hair loss. For those already suffering from hair loss, a hairline redesign or hair transplant could be an option for a permanent solution rather than prevention.

The Psychological Effects of Hair Loss

Posted by DHI Australia on July 2, 2018

Until you start losing your hair, you probably don’t appreciate how much it contributes to your sense of self. In today’s ‘selfie society’ we are constantly reminded of our appearance and are bombarded by pictures of young, fit and good looking people. If what you see in the mirror everyday reminds you that you aren’t as young as you used to be, it can be pretty devastating.

The majority of men who experience hair loss suffer from negative psychological effects, such as loss of confidence and self esteem. Many report becoming socially withdrawn because they are embarrassed about their appearance. The good news is that those who sought treatment reported feeling more positive and had increased self-esteem after treatment.

The Hair Transplant Procedure With No Time Off Work

Posted by DHI Australia on June 19, 2018

A traditional hair transplant procedure such as FUT or "strip surgery" does require time off work. This technique involves a large incision at the back of the head to remove a section of hair follicles, which is then stitched back together. Recovery and time off work (typically at least a couple of weeks) is needed to recover and let the scar heal. Thankfully, today there are more innovative, less invasive options. Today's most advanced hair transplant technique is so delicate, you may not need to take any time off work.

We explain the most delicate and advanced technique below and why it could save you a long recovery period.

Potential New Drug In The Fight Against Hair Loss & Baldness

Posted by DHI Australia on June 5, 2018

Osteoporosis medication, originally designed for the bone-thinning disease is now being considered as a possible breakthrough treatment for baldness. A recent study shows potential for the drug to help stimulate the growth of human hair follicles.

Today, in terms of medications, patients are limited to the choice of only two FDA approved options - Minoxidil and Finasteride for the treatment of hair loss or androgenetic alopecia. Given the potential for severe psychological distress caused by baldness, more, but most importantly safe, hair loss solutions are needed.

How Hormones Impact Hair Loss & Balding In Men & Women

Posted by DHI Australia on May 15, 2018

Although more prominent in men, hair loss does affect both men and women and our hormones play a key role. Hair follicles are programmed to perform on average between 25 and 30 cycles, throughout life. When a person suffers from baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, the cycles of the hair growth and loss accelerate. Initially, it is due to the hormones that attack the follicles as a poison and accelerate the pace of the growth phase. The hair is forced to go into rest phase (telogen) faster, not leaving the hair follicle enough time to make good quality hair.

It is then a vicious circle, the cycles are shorter and shorter, the hair of lesser and lesser quality. In the long run, the cycles are exhausted, and the hair does not grow again. We discuss how hormones impact hair loss for men and women and the various solutions available for consideration.
